Ty Lawson Suffers Ankle Injury

Denver Nuggets point guard, Ty Lawson left Monday nights game with an ankle injury.  Lawson left the game late in the second quarter with the injury but not before going 5 of 7 from the field, scoring 13 points in only 16 minutes of play.  Lawson has had a pretty solid season so far with over fifteen points and six assist a game.  The Nuggets are in a battle for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.  If the Nuggets had to pick a time for this injury to happen the week of

Deon Thompson Wins MVP

Former Tar Heel  Deon Thompson was named Most Valuable Player in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague tournament.  Thompson signed a two year contract last year to play in Slovenia for the Union Olimpija.  On Sunday,  Thompson led his team to a championship with a 68-63 win over Krka.  In the quarterfinals

Shammond Williams Lends Advice To Kendall Marshall

After the heartbreaking loss earlier this month to Duke, the Tar Heels have responded with three straight wins.  In that loss Carolina blew a 10 point lead with under 3 minutes to play.  It could come back to be a hard lesson learned as after the game former UNC point guard Shammond Williams had a chance to speak with a few players including current point guard Kendall Marshall.  Williams asked if anyone had ever told them how to slow a game with a lead at the end of a game.  Williams said he didn't learn this until the end of his sophomore season and that it was not uncommon for players of Marshall's caliber to be unaware how to run the shot clock down.  Usually players like Williams

Sean May Moves On To Italy

  Sean May has not played in the NBA since 2010 but he recently made a move to help his return to the League.  May has been playing and putting up solid numbers in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague for the Croatian team KK Zagreb.
 This week May signed to play in the Lega Basket Serie A with Sutor Montegranaro, a team in Italy.  This move will give May more recognition throughout the league and it will give scouts more games to see his body of work.
  May is hoping that this move will help him out in NBA free agency this summer.  In the 2006-2007 season May did average 11.9 points and 6.7 rebounds a game before he opted for knee surgery after 35 games and missed the remainder of the season and the entire following season.  Since entering the NBA in 2005 with the Charlotte Bobcats, May struggled to stay healthy.
  If he can stay healthy he can help plenty of teams in the league by coming off the bench.

Rashad McCants' Journey Back to the NBA

Rashad McCants said in an interview this week that he is preparing for a "powerful comeback" to the NBA.  He said for the last three years he looked for answers he had the whole time and claims he has surrounded himself with people to help him realize his "true self".  McCants admits he was not ready  for the mental aspect of the NBA.  He says he made mistakes and did not have the right people there to support him and help him

Tar Heels NFL Combine Preview

Charles Brown Cornerback:  The undersized Senior cornerback is projected to be a late round pick.  Brown could prove at the combine that he is worthy of a roster spot on special teams.

Zach Brown Outside Linebacker:  Brown was one of two Tar Heel that really impressed at the Senior Bowl.  One NFL draft expert has called him the most athletic linebacker in the draft and he has the ability to play strong or weak side linebacker.

Hakeem Nicks Leads Giants to Super Bowl Title

Sunday night Eli Manning might have been awarded the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player but Hakeem Nicks might have been the Giants most valuable player during their playoff run.  In the Super Bowl, Nicks had 10 catches for 109 yards.  Those 10 receptions was one shy of the Super Bowl receptions record of 11, held by Dan Ross, Jerry Rice, Wes Welker and Deion Branch.  Nicks' stats in the Giants four playoff wins were 28 catches for 444 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Nicks took advantage of the emergence of Victor Cruz as opposing defenses seemed to game plan for Cruz more so than Nicks.  This was Nicks first

Rashad McCants Returns to Professional Basketball

Rashad McCants signed with the Caciques de Humacao of the Puerto Rican professional basketball league.  Their season, which is thirty games long, will begin in March.  McCants should be making about $20,000 a month plus living expenses.  McCants has been out of the NBA since 2009 and despite a few good workouts with teams in the league, he has been unable to catch on with any team.  Claiming to be "blackballed" from the NBA, a fresh start in Puerto Rico could be very beneficial for McCants.  McCants has always had the talent to

This week the Los Angeles Clippers signed Kenyon Martin to their roster.   Now it looks as though former Tar Heel Rasheed Wallace wants to become a Los Angeles Laker.  The Lakers would be a great opportunity for Wallace, as he would immediately contribute to a bench that is less than sub-par this year. Wallace retired from the NBA after 15 seasons in 2010 but recently expressed interest in returning to the game.  During his tenure in the league, Wallace averaged over 14 points and six rebounds a game.  Several general mangers said they felt like

  The greatest rivalry in sports can only truly be appreciated if you understand what is at stake. Carolina and Duke are two schools only separated by 8 miles, with a rivalry that is a mix of hatred and respect. On a Carolina and Duke game day there are varying hues of blue throughout North Carolina towns.  It's not necessarily a state divided as many people believe. There are far more Tar Heel fans than Duke fans, it's not even close.
  It is something that is instilled at a very young age.  I remember being able to miss school in order to watch Carolina play in the early game of the ACC tournament.  The very first song I can remember my father singing was "I'm a Tar Heel Born, I'm a Tar Heel Bred and when I die I'll be a Tar Heel Dead."

Former Tar Heel Graduate Assistant, Perry Fewell Looks to Pad Resume

Hakeem Nicks is not the only member of the Tar Heel family that will be competing in the Super Bowl on Sunday.  New York Giants Defensive Coordinator Perry Fewell was a graduate assistant  in Chapel Hill from 1985-1986.  Fewell was born in Gastonia, NC and played football and ran track for South Point High School.  He then attended Lenoir Rhyne College where he graduated with a degree in business administration.  After graduation he started as a graduate assistant for the Tar Heels under Dick Crum.  Fewell moved on to coach in the college ranks at Army, Kent State and Vanderbilt.  He began his NFL coaching career in 1998, when he became the defensive backs coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars who was coached by Tom Coughlin.  Fewell has been on the coaching staffs

Hakeem Nicks' Super Bowl Week Festivities

After working in a limited fashion Wednesday, Hakeem Nicks practiced fully for the Giants on Thursday.  The highlight of practice was a one-handed catch from Nicks who reeled in the pass and then turned up field.  Nicks has said this week the Giants offense is nearly unstoppable.
  He said "I feel like we're confident enough that we're going to play the game the way we've been playing all year.  We're going to go out there and do the things we've been doing. and try not to let nothing stop us."

Larry Fedora's First Recruiting Class

Larry Fedora just survived his first signing day as the head coach of the Tar Heels.  He tweeted earlier today "Wow what a day!  There is a reason God made the sky Carolina Blue....".
  Fedora had to deal with negative recruiting, a pending NCAA infractions ruling and only five weeks to recruit at a new school.  Considering the circumstances Carolina is expected to have a top 40 recruiting class.  Here is a list of signings Fedora received today as reported on ESPN.
